Prof Bryan Jones, Professor Emeritus Biological and Organic Chemistry, University of Toronto
Dr. J. Bryan Jones is University Professor Emeritus in the Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto. He pioneered biocatalysis, the exploitation of enzymes in organic synthesis. His groundbreaking research enables scientists to design novel catalysts with specific properties, including that of targeting disease-associated proteins. Dr. Jones's recognition as a leading authority in biocatalysis is reflected by his numerous plenary lectures at international meetings, and by his broad consulting activities in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology areas. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and has been widely honoured by the Canadian, American, British, Austrian, and Swiss Chemical Societies. He has published over 210 papers, patents, and book chapters.
Prof Andrea Vasella, Professor of Organic Chemistry, ETH Zurich
Professor Andrea Vasella studied chemistry and biology at the University of Freiburg. After a short period with Professor J. Kiss at Hoffmann La Roche in Basel, he worked with Professor D. Arigoni at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich where he earned a PhD for work on the structure of a novel antifungal agent. He returned to Zurich after completing postdoctoral research with Professor J. E. Baldwin at Kings College, London, and Professor R. B. Woodward at Harvard University. He joined the University of Fribourg in 1977 as assistant professor, became associate professor at the University of Zurich in 1981, and full professor in 1987. He has been at ETH since 1993.
